Judd Apatow is an American director, writer, producer, actor, and comedian. He has directed the films The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Funny People, This Is 40, Trainwreck, The King of Staten Island, and The Bubble; he wrote the second, third, and fourth films, and co-wrote the first, sixth, and seventh. He also directed the documentary May It Last: A Portrait Of The Avett Brothers. He wrote the film Celtic Pride, and co-wrote the films Heavyweights, Fun with Dick and Jane (2005), Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, and You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. On television, he co-created The Ben Stiller Show and Funny or Die Presents, and created the show Undeclared. He also directed episodes of The Larry Sanders Show, Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, and Crashing. He wrote episodes of all of the above-mentioned shows, as well as of The Critic and Girls. He also directed episodes of the documentary series The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling and George Carlin’s American Dream.

Judd is the son of Tamara, who ran the record label Mainstream Records, and Maury Apatow, a real estate developer. He is married to actress Leslie Mann. They have two children, Maude Apatow and Iris Apatow, who have co-starred in most of Judd’s films.

Judd’s parents were both Jewish. Their families were from Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus.

Judd’s paternal grandfather was named Leo Apatow (the son of Morris Apatow and Mary). Leo was born in New York, to parents from Kiev, Ukraine.

Judd’s paternal grandmother was Belle Spivak (the daughter of Jacob Spivak and Sadie Reichman). Belle was born in Russia.

Judd’s maternal grandfather was Robert Abraham/Aba “Bob” Shad (born Abraham Shadrinsky, the son of Charles Shadrinsky and Tillie Monisoff/Monosow). Robert was born in New York, the son of parents from Vitebsk Province, Belarus, Russian Empire. Robert was a record producer and label owner, who founded Time Records, Brent Records, and Mainstream Records. Charles was the son of Moses/Mowsha-Beniamin Shmuilovich Scschedrinsky and Chana/Khana Lea Mendelevna. Tillie was the daughter of Abraham Monisoff and Hannah Kornicoff.

Judd’s maternal grandmother is named Molly. Molly appeared in Judd’s film This Is 40 (2012), playing the grandmother of Paul Rudd’s character.
