I’ve pondered for a long time why female authors were so insistent on creating a childhood friend character who was always there for their self-insert protagonist from the birth of dawn, only to emasculate the hell out of him until he became a miserable, hopeless mess. And then have him pitifully lose to the cool guy who decided to show up at the beginning of the story.
This is a viewpoint I will never be able to relate to, and I’ve cut ties with all of my narcissistic friends and I can’t ask them what they think. However, I think that a large portion of it —like all other inexplicable female behavior— must be penis envy exacerbated by the narcissism of pretending to be innocent for the sake of being beautiful. It’s a confession, that they actually are not as beautiful as they are.
There is a strong connection between envy and the urge to perceive oneself as an innocent person (victim complex), and women are very envious and self-conscious by their nature. Therefore, the more they have to pretend and conceal their ugliness, the more they feel compelled to exact their revenge on some innocent male. Because he's a man, he has something they will never have, he's a superior existence; yet here he is, expressing his love for her.
It may also be that they see love as something to work for, and when you treat them nice you’re taking their role away from them, kindness being the only thing she can bring to the table. She then snaps.
Or when you treat them nice, it may make them think that they don’t deserve it, being envious, and it may be a part of their guilt. Well either way, I guess a man does need to show restraint when showing affection. I’m not sure though. It could be because they are envious of long lasting bonds and people with childhood friends so they shit on it like this as well. Male authors are also guilty of this in huge part though. The childhood friend always miserably loses. Fucking self loathing pieces of shit.
The penis envy is also the reason why they love Boys Love so much. It’s either from a point of resentment or cuckoldry though, and for all I know the latter is way better.
